The manatee is an aquatic mammal that can be found in rivers in the Americas and along the coast of Western Africa. Manatees are so fond of aquatic plants that many were taken to feed on plants to help reduce the underwater vegetation at the Tucuruí hydroelectric power dam, in the State of Pará, Brazil. These animals can eat up to 66 pounds of plants a day! To get hold of these plants, they use their large, movable snouts. The mother manatee stays very close to her young. She likes to play with them and she sometimes carries them on her back.
